Description

Strepsils Sore Throat and Cough Lozenges are dual-action medicated lozenges designed to provide fast, targeted relief from throat infections and dry, irritating coughs associated with common colds. They work by combining antiseptic agents to fight infections with a mild local anesthetic to calm throat irritation.

Active Formulation

Each lozenge contains three primary active substances that work synergistically:

  • 2,4-Dichlorobenzyl alcohol (1.2 mg): A broad-spectrum antiseptic that kills bacteria and viruses causing throat infections.
  • Amylmetacresol (0.6 mg): A complementary antiseptic that pairs with Dichlorobenzyl alcohol to stop germs from multiplying.
  • Levomenthol (8.0 mg): A cooling compound that acts as a mild local anesthetic to numb throat soreness while relieving nasal congestion and soothing tickly, dry coughs.

Proper Administration & Dosage

To ensure the medicine is properly distributed across the throat lining, follow these guidelines:

  • How to take: Place one lozenge in the mouth and dissolve it slowly. Do not chew, crunch, or swallow it whole. Move it around the mouth continuously to avoid localized irritation or oral ulcers.
  • Frequency: Dissolve 1 lozenge every 2 to 3 hours as required.
  • Maximum limit: Do not exceed 12 lozenges within any 24-hour period.
  • Age limit: Suitable for adults, the elderly, and children over 6 years old. They are strictly contraindicated for children under 6 years due to choking hazards.

Side Effects & Safety Warnings

  • Common issues: You may experience minor tongue soreness, temporary alterations in taste (bitter or metallic sensation), or a mild burning feeling in the mouth.
  • Sugar content: The lozenge base contains liquid sucrose and glucose. Patients with diabetes or carbohydrate intolerances should use them with caution.
  • Allergic reactions: Though rare, stop use immediately if you experience hives, skin rashes, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat (angioedema).
  • When to see a doctor: If your cough produces heavy mucus, or if the sore throat lasts longer than 3 days, worsens, or is accompanied by a high fever and headache, seek immediate medical advice.
