Buscopan Plus Tablets are a combination prescription or pharmacist-only medication used for the fast and targeted relief of severe abdominal pain, cramps, and spasms. It is especially effective when the cramps are accompanied by a throbbing or aching pain.
Active Ingredients and Mechanism
Unlike standard Buscopan, Buscopan Plus combines two different active ingredients to treat both the cause of the cramp and the resulting pain simultaneously:
-
Hyoscine Butylbromide (10mg): An antispasmodic agent. It works directly on the smooth muscles of the stomach, intestines, and urinary tract to relax muscle spasms and stop the cramping.
-
Paracetamol / Acetaminophen (500mg): A well-known analgesic (painkiller). It acts on the central nervous system to block pain signals and raise your body's overall pain threshold.
Common Uses
-
Severe Gastrointestinal Cramps: Relieves intense stomach and bowel cramping caused by indigestion, gas, or stomach flu.
-
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Manages painful abdominal spasms and abdominal discomfort during IBS flare-ups.
-
Painful Menstrual Periods: Eases severe uterine cramping and localized pelvic pain during dysmenorrhea (period pain).
-
Urinary and Biliary Spasms: Alleviates cramping in the bladder or urinary tract, as well as spasms in the bile duct.

Core Side Effects & Precautions
-
Common Side Effects: Dry mouth, mild constipation, sweating changes, a slightly increased heart rate, and mild dizziness.
-
Paracetamol Warning: Do not take Buscopan Plus with any other medications that contain paracetamol (such as Panadol, Mara Moja, or multi-symptom cold/flu remedies). Accidentally doubling up on paracetamol can cause severe, irreversible liver failure.
-
Contraindications: Do not use this medication if you have narrow-angle glaucoma (as it increases fluid pressure in the eye), myasthenia gravis, an enlarged prostate with urinary retention, severe liver or kidney failure, or a mechanical blockage in your digestive tract.
-
Pregnancy & Alcohol: Avoid using Buscopan Plus during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless explicitly prescribed by your doctor. Avoid alcohol while taking it to reduce the strain on your liver.
-
Red Flag Symptoms: Seek immediate emergency medical care if your abdominal pain is sudden and severe, or if it is accompanied by a high fever, nausea, vomiting, a hard or tender abdomen, yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice), or blood in your stool.
