Description

The Evra patch is a hormonal birth control method that releases synthetic estrogen and progestin directly through the skin to prevent pregnancy. It works by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the uterine lining. When used correctly, it is up to 99% effective.

How to Use It

  • Application Schedule: Apply one patch a week for 3 weeks in a row to clean, dry skin on your buttocks, abdomen, upper outer arm, or back.
  • Patch-Free Week: On the 4th week, you do not wear a patch, which triggers a withdrawal bleed (similar to a period).
  • Restarting: After 7 patch-free days, you apply a new patch and repeat the 4-week cycle.
  • Starting Out: If you apply the first patch on the first day of your period, you are protected immediately. If applied on any other day, you must use a backup method (like condoms) for the first 7 days.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • No need to remember a daily pill.
  • Effectiveness remains uninterrupted by digestive issues or vomiting.
  • Can lighten periods and reduce cramping.

Cons:

  • Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
  • Common side effects include skin irritation, headaches, nausea, or breast tenderness.
  • Not recommended for smokers over 35 or individuals with a history of blood clots, heart disease, or certain cancers.
