Aerius 5mg Tablets are a long-acting, non-drowsy antihistamine medication containing desloratadine as the active ingredient. It provides continuous 24-hour relief from a wide spectrum of allergy symptoms without causing significant sedation.
Primary Uses
Aerius is clinically indicated to manage symptoms associated with two main allergic conditions:
-
Allergic Rhinitis (including Hay Fever): Relieves nasal congestion, sneezing, runny or itchy nose, stuffiness, and red, watery, or itchy eyes. It also alleviates itching of the throat, palate, and ears.
-
Urticaria (Hives): Alleviates chronic allergic skin conditions by suppressing severe skin itching, redness, and the formation of hives or welts.
Mechanism of Action
Desloratadine functions as a potent, long-acting peripheral histamine H1-receptor antagonist. During an allergic reaction, your body releases a chemical called histamine, which triggers inflammation, itching, and fluid discharge. Aerius blocks these specific H1 receptors, effectively neutralizing the action of histamine to stop the allergic response cascade at its source.
