Description

Apixa Q 2.5mg is a prescription-only oral anticoagulant (blood thinner) containing the active ingredient apixaban. It is primarily used to prevent and treat dangerous blood clots that can cause life-threatening emergencies, such as strokes or blockages in the lungs and legs.

Primary Medical Uses

  • Stroke Prevention: Prescribed to people with an irregular heartbeat, known as nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), to lower the risk of clots traveling to the brain.
  • Surgery Recovery: Administered short-term after hip or knee replacement surgeries to stop deep vein thrombosis (DVT) from developing while a patient has limited mobility.
  • Clot Management & Prevention: Used to treat existing blood clots in the legs (DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism), or taken long-term to prevent them from returning.

Standard Administration Guidelines

  • Dosing Routine: This medication is typically taken twice daily, ideally at the exact same times every day to keep medication levels steady.
  • Diet Flexibility: You can safely take this medication with or without food.
  • Missing a Dose: If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember on that same day. Never double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Common and Serious Side Effects

Because this medicine slows down your body's clotting ability, bleeding is the most significant risk.

  • Mild / Common: Easy bruising, frequent nosebleeds, prolonged bleeding from minor cuts, or mild nausea.
  • Severe / Emergency: Coughing up blood, blood in your urine or stool (which may look black/tarry), severe dizziness, or uncontrollable bleeding. If you experience these, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Critical Safety Rules

  • Do Not Stop Abruptly: Stopping this medication without explicit guidance from your doctor drastically and rapidly increases your risk of suffering a stroke or a severe blood clot.
  • Inform Other Providers: Always tell your dentist, surgeon, or any other healthcare specialist that you take Apixa Q before undergoing any medical procedures.
  • Drug Interactions: Speak to your pharmacist before taking over-the-counter pain relievers like aspirin or ibuprofen, as combining them with a blood thinner heavily increases your bleeding risks.
