Description

Cipram 20mg is a prescription antidepressant containing the active ingredient citalopram hydrobromide. It belongs to a class of medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). It is primarily prescribed to treat:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia)
  • Prevention of depressive symptom recurrence

How It Works

  • Regulates Serotonin: It prevents the brain from reabsorbing serotonin.
  • Improves Mood: Leaving more serotonin active in the brain enhances communication between brain cells.
  • Balances Emotions: Over several weeks, this stabilization helps restore mental and emotional balance.

How to Take It

  • Daily Schedule: Take exactly once daily, either in the morning or evening.
  • Food Options: It can be swallowed with or without food.
  • Timeline: It typically takes 2 to 4 weeks of consistent use to notice a significant improvement in mood.
  • Avoid Sudden Stoppage: Stopping abruptly can trigger withdrawal symptoms (dizziness, tingling, anxiety). Any dose reduction must be supervised by your doctor.

Common Side Effects

Most of these side effects are mild and tend to disappear after the first week or two:

  • Nausea, dry mouth, or diarrhea
  • Drowsiness, extreme fatigue, or yawning
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia) or vivid dreams
  • Increased sweating
  • Sexual Changes: Reduced libido, delayed ejaculation, or inability to orgasm (which may persist during treatment).

Critical Warnings

  • Mental Health Changes: SSRIs can temporarily increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors in children, teens, and young adults under 24. Monitor mood shifts closely.
  • Serotonin Syndrome: Seek emergency care if you experience high fever, severe muscle stiffness, tremors, confusion, or a rapid heart rate.
  • Heart Hazards: Citalopram can alter your heart rhythm (QT prolongation). Avoid if you have congenital heart defects or severe arrhythmias.
  • Drug Interactions: Never take Cipram with MAO inhibitors (like linezolid), or with blood thinners and NSAID pain relievers (like ibuprofen) without medical approval due to increased bleeding risks.
