Daktarin Intensiv is an over-the-counter antifungal cream primarily used to treat fungal skin infections like athlete's foot (tinea pedis) and jock itch (tinea cruris, also known as dhobie itch).
How it Works
Unlike regular Daktarin (which typically contains miconazole), Daktarin Intensiv contains ketoconazole 2% w/w as its active ingredient. It works by destroying the cell membranes of the fungi, stopping them from growing and allowing the skin to heal. It is highly regarded for providing rapid relief from symptoms like persistent itching, redness, scaling, and inflammation.
How to Use It
-
Application: Wash and thoroughly dry the infected area. Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected skin and the immediate surrounding area once or twice daily.
-
Duration:
- For mild athlete's foot between the toes, treatment may only take 1 week.
- For more severe infections or jock itch, it usually requires 2 to 4 weeks.
-
Important: You must continue applying the cream for a few days after all physical signs of the infection have vanished to prevent it from returning.
Key Precautions
-
Age Limits: It is generally formulated for adults and adolescents; its safety and efficacy in children under 17 have not been firmly established.
-
Application Sites: It is for external use on the skin only. Do not apply it to broken skin, and keep it strictly away from your eyes, mouth, nose, or inside the vagina.
-
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor or pharmacist before use. If breastfeeding, never apply the cream directly to the breasts.
If your symptoms do not show any signs of clinical improvement after 4 weeks of consistent treatment, stop using the cream and consult a healthcare professional to reconsider the diagnosis.
