Dapefy tablets are a prescription medication primarily used to manage Type 2 diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease (CKD).
The active ingredient in standard Dapefy tablets is dapagliflozin, which belongs to a class of medications called SGLT2 inhibitors (sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors).
How It Works
Dapefy works directly through the kidneys:
-
Lowers Blood Sugar: It blocks the kidneys from reabsorbing sugar back into the bloodstream. Instead, the excess sugar is filtered out and removed from the body through your urine.
-
Protects the Heart and Kidneys: By flushing out excess sugar, salt, and water, it reduces fluid retention and blood pressure. This eases the physical workload on the heart and decreases internal pressure on the kidneys, slowing down organ damage.
Available Forms & Formulations
-
Single-Ingredient (Dapefy 5mg / 10mg): Contains only dapagliflozin.
-
Triple-Combination (Dapefy SM): Designed for advanced Type 2 diabetes management, this version combines three therapies into one tablet: dapagliflozin, sitagliptin, and metformin.
Common Side Effects
Because this medication causes sugar to leave the body through your urine, it alters fluid balance and local glucose levels:
- More frequent urination or increased thirst
- Genital yeast (fungal) infections
- Mild urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up
Important Precautions
-
Hydration: It is important to drink plenty of fluids while taking Dapefy to avoid dehydration.
-
The "Sick Day Rule": If you experience severe vomiting, diarrhea, or a fever that prevents you from eating or drinking normally, consult your doctor. SGLT2 inhibitors are typically paused during acute illness to prevent serious complications like kidney strain or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
-
Contraindications: Dapefy is not used to treat Type 1 diabetes. It should not be taken by individuals with severe kidney failure who are on dialysis, or by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
