Folgaine Plus is a combination prescription topical solution used to treat androgenetic alopecia (male pattern hair loss). It formulation pairs two highly effective hair regrowth agents to stimulate follicles and slow down thinning directly at the source.
Active Ingredients & Mechanism
The solution is applied topically to the scalp and consists of a dual-action formula:
-
Minoxidil (5%): A vasodilator that improves blood flow to the hair follicles, extending the growth phase (anagen) of the hair and stimulating robust regrowth.
-
Finasteride (0.1%): A 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that blocks the local conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone primarily responsible for shrinking hair follicles in male pattern baldness.
Research suggests that combining topical minoxidil and finasteride is often more effective than using either active ingredient alone.
Dosage and Application
-
Standard Dose: The typical recommendation is to apply 1 ml to a completely dry scalp twice daily.
-
Application Method: 1 ml is equivalent to either one measured dropper or 5 spray pumps, targeted directly onto the thinning areas (such as the crown or temples).
-
Consistency: It must be used daily without interruption. Discontinuing the medication will generally result in the reversal of regrowth within a few months.
Side Effects & Precautions
While generally well-tolerated because it is applied topically rather than swallowed, it can carry risks:
-
Local Irritation: Scalp redness, itching, burning, dryness, or flaking at the application site.
-
Hypertrichosis: Unwanted hair growth if the solution accidentally drips onto the face or other body parts.
-
Contraindications:
- It is strictly contraindicated for women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as finasteride can cause severe birth defects in a male fetus.
- It is not meant for minors under 18 years old.
- Individuals with pre-existing heart disease, arrhythmias, severe liver disease, or uncontrolled hypertension should consult a doctor before use.
