Description

Gentamicin eye drops are a prescription-only aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat bacterial eye infections. They work by stopping the growth of bacteria causing conditions like pink eye (conjunctivitis), blepharitis, and corneal ulcers.

Key Medical Facts & Uses

  • Approved Conditions: Prescribed for superficial ocular infections including bacterial conjunctivitis, keratitis, and eyelid inflammation.
  • Infection Specificity: It only clears bacterial infections. It will not work for viral infections (like standard viral pink eye) or fungal eye issues.
  • Brand Names: Commonly marketed under names like Garamycin, Genoptic, and Gentak.

Standard Dosage and Administration

Always follow the specific instructions on your prescription label.

  • Mild to Moderate Infections: 1 to 2 drops every 4 hours.
  • Severe Infections: Up to 2 drops every hour as directed by your doctor.
  • Duration: Typically used for 5 to 10 days. You must finish the entire course even if your symptoms improve early.

Crucial Usage Precautions

  • Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses while treating an active eye infection. “Contact lenses should be removed when treating an eye infection with these drops.”
  • Contamination Risk: Never let the dropper tip touch your eye, fingers, or any surface.
  • Other Eye Medications: If you use multiple eye drops, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between applying each medication.
  • Nasolacrimal Occlusion: After putting in a drop, close your eye and gently press the inner corner near your nose for 1 to 2 minutes. This keeps the medicine inside your eye and lowers systemic absorption.

Side Effects & Risks

  • Common: Temporary stinging, burning, redness, or brief blurred vision right after application.
  • Prolonged Use Risks: Using topical antibiotics too long can cause a secondary fungal infection or bacterial resistance.
  • When to call a doctor: Stop use and seek immediate care if you experience severe allergic reactions, worsening eye pain, swelling, or heavy pus discharge.
