Description

Mara Moja Tablets are a widely used, over-the-counter (OTC) multi-action painkiller and fever reducer primarily used across East Africa for the fast relief of mild to moderate aches, pains, and inflammation.

Active Ingredients and Mechanism

Mara Moja uses a triple-action formula where the ingredients complement each other to maximize pain relief:

  • Aspirin (400mg): A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It lowers pain, reduces inflammation, and brings down fevers by blocking chemical messengers that trigger swelling.
  • Paracetamol / Acetaminophen (200mg): An analgesic and antipyretic. It elevates your body's overall pain threshold and acts directly on the brain's heat-regulating center to cool down a fever.
  • Caffeine Anhydrous (50mg): A mild nervous system stimulant. Caffeine speeds up how quickly your body absorbs the painkillers and enhances their overall pain-relieving strength.

Common Uses

  • Headaches & Migraines: Fast-acting relief for tension headaches and throbbing cranial pain.
  • Body Aches: Alleviates muscle pain, backaches, joint stiffness, and generalized discomfort from a cold or flu.
  • Dental & Menstrual Pain: Eases throbbing toothaches and painful menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea).
  • Fever Reduction: Quickly cools down an elevated body temperature caused by mild infections.

Basic Administration Details

  • Standard Adult Dosage: Adults and children over 12 years old can take 1 to 2 tablets every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
  • Maximum Limit: Never exceed 8 tablets in any 24-hour period. Taking too much can cause irreversible liver damage due to paracetamol toxicity, or internal bleeding from aspirin.
  • Method: Always swallow the tablets whole with a full glass of water or milk. To protect your stomach lining from aspirin irritation, always take Mara Moja after a meal.
  • Duration: Use it strictly as a short-term solution. If pain persists for more than 3 to 5 days, stop taking it and consult a doctor.

Core Side Effects & Precautions

  • Common Side Effects: Heartburn, mild stomach upset, nausea, and increased alertness or difficulty sleeping (due to the caffeine).
  • Stomach Ulcer Warning: Because it contains high-dose aspirin, avoid this drug if you have a history of peptic ulcers, acid reflux, or stomach bleeding. It can severely irritate the stomach lining.
  • Hidden Paracetamol Risks: Do not take Mara Moja at the same time as other cold, flu, or cough remedies that contain paracetamol. Accidentally doubling up on paracetamol can severely damage your liver.
  • Age Restrictions: Do not give Mara Moja to children under 12 years old. Giving aspirin to children recovering from viral infections (like chickenpox or flu) is linked to Reye’s Syndrome, a rare but life-threatening brain and liver condition.
  • Pregnancy & Asthma: This medication is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless explicitly cleared by a doctor. People with asthma should also use caution, as aspirin can trigger an asthma attack.
