Description

Mirtazapine 30mg tablets are a prescription antidepressant primarily used to treat major depressive disorder in adults. Known as a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant (NaSSA), the 30mg strength frequently serves as a common maintenance dose to help restore sleep, stabilize appetite, and rebuild daily energy levels.

Key Clinical Information

  • How it Works: Mirtazapine elevates mood by adjusting the levels of noradrenaline and serotonin in the brain. Interestingly, it has a dual face: lower doses are highly sedating due to histamine blocking, while higher doses (30mg and above) tend to become more activating and noradrenergic.
  • Administration: It is typically taken once daily directly before bedtime because it causes significant drowsiness. Your doctor may also choose to split it into a smaller morning dose and a larger bedtime dose
  • Timeline: It usually takes 1 to 2 weeks to begin working, and full benefits are generally observed after 2 to 4 weeks. A standard course for depression typically lasts 4 to 6 months to prevent a relapse. \
  • Stopping Treatment: Never stop taking mirtazapine abruptly. Doing so can trigger withdrawal symptoms like nausea, dizziness, anxiety, and headaches. Your doctor will provide a schedule to taper your dose down gradually.

Common Side Effects

  • Drowsiness and strong sedation
  • Increased appetite and subsequent weight gain
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness and fatigue

Critical Safety Precautions & Drug Interactions

  • Suicidal Thoughts: Like many antidepressants, mirtazapine can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children, adolescents, and young adults (up to age 24). Close monitoring by loved ones and healthcare providers is vital during the first few weeks of treatment.
  • MAO Inhibitors: It is strictly forbidden to take mirtazapine with or within 14 days of taking a Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI). Doing so can cause life-threatening spikes in blood pressure or severe seizures.
  • Serotonin Syndrome: Combining mirtazapine with other serotonergic medications (such as SSRIs, SNRIs, tramadol, St. John's Wort, or certain migraine medications) elevates the risk of serotonin syndrome, characterized by agitation, rapid heart rate, muscle rigidity, and high body temperature.
