Modafinil is indicated for adults experiencing excessive drowsiness caused by specific medical conditions:

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): Used as an adjunct therapy alongside standard treatments like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines to manage daytime sleepiness. It does not treat the underlying airway obstruction.

Shift Work Disorder (SWD): For individuals working irregular or overnight hours who struggle with extreme sleepiness during their working shift.

Administration & Usage Considerations

Narcolepsy or OSA: The medication is typically prescribed to be taken orally once daily in the morning. Taking it later than midday may interfere with nighttime sleep.

Shift Work Disorder: It is generally scheduled to be taken approximately 1 hour before the start of the work shift.

Administration: Tablets should be swallowed whole with water, and can be taken with or without food. Adjustments to the administration schedule or treatment plan may be medically necessary for geriatric patients or those with severe hepatic impairment.
Side Effects & Safety Warnings
While modafinil is generally considered to have a lower risk of dependence than classic stimulants, it is classified as a regulated, controlled substance because of its potential for misuse.
