Movicol Paediatric is an osmotic laxative powder used to treat chronic constipation and faecal impaction (severe, impacted constipation) in children. It contains Macrogol 3350 (polyethylene glycol), an active ingredient that binds to water, carrying it down into the bowel to soften hard stools and stimulate a natural bowel movement. It also includes a balanced blend of electrolytes—sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and potassium chloride—to help maintain your child's normal fluid and salt balances during treatment.
Standard Dosing for Chronic Constipation
Always follow the specific dosing plan prescribed by your child’s paediatrician. For general reference, standard starting doses for chronic constipation are:

Children aged 1 to 6 years: 1 sachet daily.

Children aged 7 to 11 years: 2 sachets daily.

Note: For faecal impaction, doctors may prescribe a much higher, escalating number of sachets over a short period (typically 5 to 11 years of age), which must only be done under strict medical supervision.
Preparation & Administration Instructions

Dissolve the powder: Empty the contents of 1 sachet into 62.5 ml of plain water (roughly a quarter of a glass).

Stir thoroughly: Mix well until the powder completely dissolves and the solution becomes clear.

Giving the dose: The medicine can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. If your child finds it difficult to drink all at once, you can split the dose (e.g., half in the morning, half in the evening).

Storage of pre-mixed solution: If you prepare it in advance, store the mixed solution in a covered container in the refrigerator and use it within 6 to 24 hours. Throw away any leftover solution after that time.
Critical Safety Precautions

Avoid Dehydration: Never give this powder dry or without mixing it in the required volume of water. Ensure your child drinks plenty of extra fluids throughout the day.

Medication Spacing: If your child is taking higher volumes of Movicol, it can flush other medicines out of their system. Do not give other oral medications within one hour before or one hour after giving Movicol.

When NOT to use: Do not use Movicol if your child has a known or suspected bowel blockage, a perforated gut wall, or severe inflammatory bowel diseases. Consult a doctor first if your child has an impaired gag reflex, heart problems, or kidney disease.

Side Effects: Mild stomach grumbling, bloating, or light cramps are common initially. If your child develops severe diarrhoea, stop giving the medication or reduce the dose and contact your paediatrician to avoid dehydration.
