Description

Ofloxacin eye drops are a prescription fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial eye infections, such as bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) and bacterial corneal ulcers.

Common Uses & Typical Dosages

The exact dosage and duration will vary based on your infection type and your doctor's instructions. The standard treatment schedules for a 0.3% solution include:

  • Bacterial Conjunctivitis:
    • Days 1 and 2: 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye(s) every 2 to 4 hours while awake.
    • Days 3 through 7: 1 to 2 drops 4 times a day.
  • Bacterial Corneal Ulcers:
    • Days 1 and 2: 1 to 2 drops every 30 minutes while awake, and a dose 4 and 6 hours after going to bed.
    • Days 3 through 7 to 9: 1 to 2 drops every hour while awake.
    • Days 7 to 9 until healed: 1 to 2 drops 4 times daily.

Crucial Patient Tips

  • Complete the full course: <Quote>Stopping the antibiotic eye drop too soon can cause your infection to come back and be harder to treat.
  • Avoid contamination: Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye, fingertips, or any other surface.
  • No contact lenses: Do not wear contact lenses while your infection is active. The solution contains benzalkonium chloride, which soft contact lenses can absorb and become discolored.
  • Wait between medications: If you use other eye medications, wait at least 5 to 10 minutes between applying them.

Side Effects & Safety Cautions

  • Common mild effects: You may experience brief stinging, burning, blurred vision, or a feeling like something is in your eye immediately after use.
  • Light sensitivity: Your eyes may become sensitive to bright lights, so wearing sunglasses can help.
