Description

Peditral ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) Sachet is a scientifically balanced glucose-and-electrolyte formula used to treat and prevent dehydration caused by acute diarrhoea, vomiting, heat exhaustion, or excessive sweating. It contains a World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended mixture of dextrose anhydrous, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, and sodium citrate. These components work together in the small intestine to rapidly replace lost body fluids and essential minerals.

How to Prepare and Use Peditral ORS

It is critical to mix Peditral exactly as directed on your specific packet, as incorrect dilution can make the solution ineffective or unsafe.

  • Check the Packet Volume: Peditral comes in different sachet sizes (such as smaller 4.2g sachets or larger 22g sachets). Look at your specific packet to see the required water volume (commonly 200ml for small sachets or 1 litre for large sachets).
  • Water Selection: Dissolve the entire contents of the sachet in clean, fresh drinking water. For infants, always use freshly boiled and cooled water.
  • Mixing: Stir the powder well until it is fully dissolved. Do not boil the solution after mixing, and do not add extra sugar or salt, as this alters the delicate electrolyte balance.
  • Administration: Sip the solution frequently in small amounts, especially after each loose stool or episode of vomiting. For infants and young children, offer frequent small sips or spoonfuls.
  • Storage Time: Consume the solution within 1 hour if stored at room temperature. If refrigerated immediately, it can be kept and used for up to 24 hours. Discard any unused solution after 24 hours.

Important Precautions & Warnings

  • Does Not Stop Diarrhoea: Peditral replaces lost fluids to keep the body functioning safely, but it will not stop the underlying diarrhoea or vomiting itself.
  • Medical Conditions: Consult a healthcare professional before use if you have kidney disease, a history of diabetes, or if you are managing severe fluid loss in an infant under 2 years old.
  • When to Seek Immediate Medical Care: Stop and seek emergency medical attention if you notice signs of severe dehydration (extreme drowsiness, sunken eyes, no tears when crying, dry mouth, or very little to no urine). You should also see a doctor immediately if there is a high fever, blood in the stool, persistent vomiting that prevents fluid intake, or if symptoms do not improve after 24 to 48 hours.
