Description

Plendil 5mg is a prescription medication containing the active ingredient felodipine, which is a long-acting calcium channel blocker used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and chronic stable angina (chest pain). By relaxing and widening your blood vessels, it allows blood to flow more easily, which lowers your blood pressure and reduces how hard your heart has to work.

Essential Usage Guidelines

  • Swallow Whole: You must swallow the tablet entirely whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, break, chew, or dissolve it, as this destroys its 24-hour extended-release mechanism.
  • Daily Routine: Take it once a day at the same time each morning, either with a light meal or on an empty stomach.
  • Avoid Grapefruit Juice: Do not consume grapefruit juice while taking this medication. It can significantly increase the drug levels in your blood and heighten the risk of severe side effects.
  • Stand Up Slowly: This medicine can cause a temporary drop in blood pressure when you change positions. Rise slowly from sitting or lying down to prevent dizziness or fainting.

Common Side Effects

Most side effects are mild and tend to fade as your body adjusts. If they persist, consult your healthcare provider:

  • Swelling of the ankles or feet (edema)
  • Headaches and dizziness
  • Flushing (warmth or redness in the face/neck)
  • Nausea or fatigue

Critical Safety Warnings

  • Do Not Stop Abruptly: Never stop taking Plendil suddenly without a doctor's advice, even if you feel completely fine. High blood pressure rarely has visible symptoms, and stopping the drug abruptly can cause your blood pressure to dangerously spike or worsen chest pain.
  • Alcohol Warning: Limit or avoid alcohol, as it can dangerously compound the medication's blood-pressure-lowering effect, causing severe dizziness.
  • Pre-existing Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have liver disease (as the drug is processed by the liver), kidney issues, or heart conditions.
  • Pregnancy & Nursing: Speak directly with a doctor if you are pregnant, planning a baby, or breastfeeding, as alternative treatments may be safer.
