Description

Postinor-2 Tablets (commonly known in Kenya as P2) is an emergency contraceptive pill used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure. It contains the active hormonal ingredient levonorgestrel (0.75 mg) and is designed strictly for occasional, emergency use rather than a regular method of birth control.

How to Take It (Dosage & Timing)

  • First Dose: Take the first 750 mcg tablet as soon as possible, preferably within 12 to 24 hours, and no later than 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex.
  • Second Dose: Take the second 750 mcg tablet exactly 12 hours after the first dose.
  • Vomiting Caution: If you vomit within 2 hours of taking either tablet, you must consult a healthcare provider or pharmacist immediately to get a replacement dose, as the medication may not have been absorbed.

Efficacy Rates

The pill works primarily by delaying or preventing ovulation. Its effectiveness drops significantly the longer you wait to take it:

  • Within 24 hours: 95% effective
  • Between 24 to 48 hours: 85% effective
  • Between 48 to 72 hours: 58% effective

Important Safety & Health Considerations

  • No STI Protection: Postinor-2 does not protect against HIV/AIDS or other sexually transmitted infections.
  • Common Side Effects: You may experience brief nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, headaches, or dizziness. Your next menstrual period may also arrive slightly early or late.
  • When to Test: Take a home pregnancy test if your period is delayed by more than 7 days, or if it has been more than 3 weeks since you took the medication.
