Description

Prednisolone 20mg is a prescription corticosteroid medication used to suppress an overactive immune system and reduce severe inflammation. A 20mg dose is a moderate-to-high strength typically prescribed to manage acute flare-ups of chronic conditions. Because steroids profoundly impact the body, this medication must only be taken under direct medical supervision and never stopped abruptly

Primary Clinical Uses

Doctors prescribe prednisolone 20mg for a wide spectrum of health problems:

  • Respiratory Conditions: Severe asthma exacerbations and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Autoimmune Flare-ups: Active episodes of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Severe Allergic Reactions: Acute skin or systemic allergies that fail to respond to standard antihistamines.
  • Inflammatory Bowel Diseases: Inducing remission in active Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.
  • Kidney & Blood Disorders: Managing conditions like nephrotic syndrome, hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia.

Standard Administration Instructions

Your exact schedule depends entirely on your medical condition, but general best practices include:

  • Morning Timing: Take your entire daily dose as a single bolus in the morning with breakfast. “It's best to take prednisolone tablets or liquid once a day in the morning so it does not keep you awake.”
  • Stomach Protection: Taking it with food or milk helps prevent localized gastric irritation and indigestion.
  • Strict Adherence: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is nearly time for your next scheduled dose. Never take two doses at once to make up for a missed one.

Important Safety Warnings

  • The Tapering Mandate: Never abruptly halt your treatment. “If you suddenly stop taking prednisone, your body may not have enough natural steroids to function normally.” This causes a dangerous crash known as an adrenal crisis, marked by severe fatigue, low blood pressure, and profound weakness. Your doctor will provide a precise schedule to slowly reduce the dose.
  • Immune Suppression: Prednisolone dampens your body's defense system, making you highly susceptible to infections. Avoid contact with individuals carrying contagious illnesses like chickenpox, shingles, or measles.
  • Vaccination Restrictions: You must not receive any "live" vaccines (such as yellow fever or certain nasal spray vaccines) while taking this dosage.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your doctor if you take NSAID pain relievers (like ibuprofen or aspirin), blood thinners (like warfarin), or diabetes treatments, as prednisolone can spike your blood sugar and increase gastric bleeding risks.

Common vs. Serious Side Effects

While a short course (5 to 7 days) is generally well tolerated, side effects can still surface:

Common Side Effects (Manageable)

Serious Side Effects (Seek Immediate Medical Care)

Insomnia and restlessness

Black, tarry, or bloody stools (signs of stomach bleeding)

Increased appetite and fluid retention

Severe upper abdominal pain radiating to the back

Indigestion or mild stomach irritation

Sudden shortness of breath or profound swelling in limbs

• Mild mood swings or irritability

• Severe psychological shifts, suicidal thoughts, or confusion

• Temporary spikes in blood sugar and blood pressure

• Signs of systemic infection (fever, chills, severe sore throat)
