Description

Prednisolone 5mg is a prescription corticosteroid medication used primarily to reduce severe inflammation, calm an overactive immune system, and treat various inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It works by mimicking cortisol, a natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands that helps regulate stress and metabolism.

Primary Medical Uses

Doctors prescribe prednisolone to treat a wide variety of medical issues, including:

  • Respiratory Conditions: Severe asthma flares, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and severe allergic reactions.
  • Autoimmune & Inflammatory Diseases: Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, and inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis.
  • Allergies & Skin Disorders: Severe eczema, hives, and acute allergic reactions.
  • Hormone Replacement: Supplementing low steroid levels if the body cannot make enough natural cortisol.

General Dosage and How to Take It

The exact number of 5mg tablets you need to take depends entirely on your specific health problem, weight, and clinical response.

  • Morning Routine: Unless told otherwise, always take prednisolone as a single dose once a day in the morning with breakfast. Taking it early prevents the medication from keeping you awake at night and aligns with your body's natural cortisol rhythm.
  • Stomach Protection: Swallow the tablets whole with food or milk to minimize stomach irritation.
  • Do Not Stop Abruptly: If you have been taking this medication for more than 3 weeks, you must never stop taking it suddenly. Stopping abruptly can trigger a medical emergency known as an adrenal crisis. Your doctor will provide a schedule to slowly reduce (taper) your dose.

Common Side Effects

Short courses (a few days) generally cause minimal side effects, but longer treatments can lead to:

  • Increased appetite and fluid retention, leading to weight gain.
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) and mild mood or behavior changes.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (important if you have diabetes).
  • A higher susceptibility to catching infections.

Crucial Safety Precautions

  • Avoid Infections: Avoid close contact with anyone who has chickenpox, shingles, or measles, as these infections can become exceptionally dangerous while taking steroids.
  • Steroid Treatment Card: If your treatment lasts longer than 3 weeks, carry a Steroid Treatment Card with you at all times so emergency medical staff know you are on long-term steroids.
  • Fungal Infections: You should not take this medication if you currently have a widespread fungal infection.
