Rennie Liquid Heartburn Relief is an oral suspension formulated to provide fast, soothing relief from heartburn, acid reflux, and indigestion. It works via a dual-action mechanism: it quickly neutralises excess stomach acid while forming a physical protective layer (an alginate raft) on top of the stomach contents to prevent acid from escaping into the food pipe.
Active Ingredients
Each 5ml dose contains:
-
Sodium Alginate (250mg): Forms the protective physical barrier.
-
Sodium Bicarbonate (133.5mg): Neutralises stomach acid.
-
Calcium Carbonate (80mg): Provides additional acid neutralisation.
Dosage and Administration
Always shake the bottle well before using. The standard doses are taken up to four times a day, specifically after meals and right before going to bed:
-
Adults and children over 12: Take a 10ml to 20ml dose (equivalent to two to four 5ml spoonfuls).
-
Children aged 6 to 12: Take a smaller 5ml to 10ml dose (one to two 5ml spoonfuls).
Important Safety Warnings
-
Age restriction: This medicine is completely unsuitable for children under the age of 6.
-
High sodium content: Because this formulation relies heavily on sodium-based compounds, it carries a high sodium load. Anyone restricted to a low-salt or low-sodium diet—such as individuals managing specific kidney conditions or congestive heart failure—must take this into consideration.
-
Medical review: If your underlying acid reflux or indigestion symptoms do not show signs of improvement after 7 consecutive days of usage, you should stop and have your clinical situation reviewed by a doctor.
-
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: While this liquid suspension is generally considered safe to use during pregnancy and while nursing, it is always best practice to consult your healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
