Septrin DS 960mg Tablets is a prescription-only, double-strength combination antibiotic pack containing 10 tablets used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. Each tablet consists of two active antibacterial ingredients: 800 mg Sulfamethoxazole and 160 mg Trimethoprim (often collectively referred to as Co-Trimoxazole). These components work synergistically to block bacterial growth from multiple pathways.
Primary Uses
Your doctor may prescribe Septrin DS to treat or prevent several conditions, including:

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Bladder and kidney infections.
-
Respiratory Infections: Acute bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and middle ear infections (otitis media).
-
Gastrointestinal Infections: Traveler's diarrhea and shigellosis.
-
PCP Prophylaxis: Prevention and treatment of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, particularly in individuals with compromised immune systems.
How to Take It
-
With Food: It is highly recommended to take Septrin DS with food or a snack to minimize stomach upset or nausea.
-
Hydration: Drink plenty of water (several glasses throughout the day) while on this medication. This prevents the formation of drug crystals in your kidneys or urine.
-
Complete the Course: Always finish all 10 tablets exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, even if you start to feel better. Stopping early can cause the infection to return and promote antibiotic resistance.
