Septrin Paediatric Suspension is a prescription oral combination antibiotic containing sulfamethoxazole (200 mg) and trimethoprim (40 mg) per 5 mL spoonful. Also known globally by its generic name co-trimoxazole, it is specifically designed for children aged 6 weeks to 12 years to combat specific bacterial and parasitic infections.
Primary Medical Uses

Respiratory Infections: Treats acute bronchitis and middle ear infections (otitis media).

Urinary Tract Infections: Resolves bacterial infections of the bladder and urinary tract.

Pneumocystis Jirovecii Pneumonia (PJP): Treats and prevents a severe type of lung infection, especially in immunocompromised children or those exposed to HIV.

Rare Infections: Targets specific conditions like toxoplasmosis and nocardiosis.
Standard Administration Guidelines
The suspension should be shaken thoroughly before use and given with food or drink to minimize the risk of nausea or stomach upset. Ensure the child drinks plenty of water during the treatment course.
Standard dosage for acute infections is usually calculated by weight (~6 mg trimethoprim / 30 mg sulfamethoxazole per kg daily) split into two doses:

6 weeks to 5 months: 2.5 mL every 12 hours.

Critical Contraindications: Never give Septrin to infants under 6 weeks old (unless specifically directed for PJP prophylaxis) due to the risk of severe newborn jaundice. Do not use if the child has severe liver or kidney disease or a known allergy to sulfonamide medications.
