Description

Solifenacin 5mg is a prescription medication primarily used to treat symptoms of an overactive bladder (OAB). It belongs to a class of drugs called antimuscarinics (or anticholinergics), which work by relaxing the bladder muscles. This relaxation increases the amount of urine your bladder can hold and reduces sudden, uncontrollable urges to urinate.

Key Medical Information

  • Primary Uses: It effectively treats sudden urinary urgency, frequent urination, and urge incontinence (leaking urine).
  • Standard Dosage: The standard starting dose for adults is 5 mg taken once daily. Depending on how well your body tolerates the medication and if symptoms persist, a doctor may eventually increase the dose to 10 mg per day.
  • How to Take It: Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet, as this can affect how the drug is released. It can be taken with or without food, but should ideally be taken at the same time each day.

Common Side Effects

Because solifenacin blocks acetylcholine receptors throughout the body, it commonly causes mild anticholinergic side effects:

  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation or stomach upset
  • Blurred vision (avoid driving if this occurs)
  • Drowsiness or fatigue

Who Should Avoid It?

You should not take solifenacin if you experience any of the following conditions without explicit medical clearance:

  • Urinary retention (inability to empty your bladder)
  • Gastric retention or severe digestive delays
  • Uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma
  • Severe liver or kidney disease (these conditions require strict dose restrictions, usually capping the dose at 5 mg maximum)
