Sucrafil O Gel is a combination prescription medication used primarily to treat and manage stomach ulcers, acidity, heartburn, and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It contains two active ingredients: Sucralfate (500 mg / 5 ml) and Oxetacaine / Oxethazaine (10 mg / 5 ml).
How It Works
-
Sucralfate (Ulcer Protectant): Chemical action that forms a thick, paste-like protective barrier over damaged tissues and ulcer craters. This shields the lining from further damage caused by stomach acid, pepsin, and bile salts, allowing the area to heal naturally.
-
Oxetacaine (Local Anaesthetic): Acts as a numbing agent directly on the inflamed or irritated gut lining. It delivers fast, temporary relief from the intense burning sensations and sharp pain associated with acid damage.
Crucial Usage Instructions
-
Empty Stomach: Must be taken on an empty stomach, ideally 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals. Taking it with food severely limits its ability to coat your stomach lining.
-
Do Not Dilute or Flush: Avoid drinking water or any liquid immediately after swallowing the gel. Liquid will wash away the protective barrier before it can bond with the ulcer site.
-
Antacid Interactions: Do not take over-the-counter antacids 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after taking this medication, as they can interfere with how it functions.
-
Shake Well: Always shake the bottle vigorously before measuring out your exact dose using a proper measuring device.
Common Side Effects & Precautions
-
Constipation: This is the most common side effect due to the aluminum present in sucralfate. To counter this, drink plenty of fluids throughout the day and eat a diet rich in dietary fiber.
-
Other Mild Effects: You may experience dizziness, drowsiness, a dry mouth, or mild nausea. Avoid driving if you feel dizzy or sleepy.
-
Special Caution: Consult a doctor before use if you have kidney or liver complications, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication is generally not recommended for children.
