Sudocrem is a widely popular, over-the-counter medicated antiseptic healing cream primarily trusted for treating nappy rash (diaper dermatitis), eczema, and minor skin irritations. Formulated in Ireland in 1931, it works by providing a water-repellent barrier that soothes inflammation, protects vulnerable skin from moisture or irritants, and relieves discomfort.
Common Uses
While most famous as a baby care essential, Sudocrem is a multi-purpose formula suitable for the whole family to treat various skin conditions:
-
Nappy Rash & Chafing: Forms a protective film that isolates delicate skin from urine, feces, or friction.
-
Eczema & Dry Skin: Lanolin acts as an emollient to soften cracked, dry skin while trapping essential hydration.
-
Minor Wounds: Safely protects surface cuts, grazes, scratches, and carpet burns from bacterial infection.
-
Burns & Sunburn: Rapidly cools and eases mild heat inflammation, supporting tissue regeneration.
-
Acne Spots: Antibacterial agents fight blemish-causing bacteria, while zinc helps reduce painful redness overnight.
-
Bedsores & Chilblains: Offers a defensive coating for pressure ulcers or skin damaged by extreme cold.
Active Ingredients
Sudocrem’s classic therapeutic formula relies on a specific blend of active components:
-
Zinc Oxide (15.25%): An astringent that minimizes tissue fluid loss and creates a robust physical skin barrier.
-
Anhydrous Hypoallergenic Lanolin (4%): A rich emollient that mimics human skin oils to soothe and smooth irritated areas.
-
Benzyl Alcohol (0.39%): Functions as a mild local anesthetic to reduce localized pain and acts as an antiseptic disinfectant.
-
Benzyl Benzoate & Benzyl Cinnamate: Provide active antibacterial and antifungal properties to help prevent infection.
How to Apply Safely
-
Clean and dry the affected skin area thoroughly before use.
- Take a small amount on your fingertip; a very little goes a long way.
- Gently massage using light, circular motions.
- Aim to create a thin, translucent film. If the area looks stark white, you have applied too much.
Note: Avoid applying Sudocrem to deep, open wounds, severe burns, or directly to the eyes and mouth.
