Vitapyn tablets are a multi-action, prescription-only combination medication used to manage moderate to severe pain, tension headaches, migraines, toothaches, and muscular aches. Because it contains an opioid component (codeine), it is strictly regulated under the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya and requires a valid prescription from a licensed healthcare provider.
Active Ingredients & How They Work
Each Vitapyn tablet contains a specific combination of four active ingredients that target pain through different pathways:

Paracetamol (450 mg): A widely used analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer).

Caffeine (50 mg): A mild stimulant that enhances the pain-relieving efficacy of paracetamol and helps counteract drowsiness.

Codeine Phosphate (10 mg): A mild-to-moderate opioid analgesic that works by binding to opioid receptors in the brain and spinal cord to alter how your body feels and responds to pain.

Doxylamine Succinate (5 mg): An antihistamine with sedating properties that helps reduce physical and emotional tension associated with severe pain.
Standard Dosage

Adults and Children over 12 years: Take 1 to 2 tablets every 4 hours as needed for pain.

Maximum Limit: Strictly do not exceed 8 tablets in any 24-hour period.

Duration: Limit continuous use to a maximum of 3 days unless expressly directed by a physician. If your symptoms persist, consult a doctor.
Critical Safety Warnings & Precautions

Risk of Dependency: Codeine is an opioid. Regular or long-term use can quickly lead to physical addiction, tolerance, and severe withdrawal symptoms upon stopping.

Liver Toxicity: Never take Vitapyn alongside any other medication containing paracetamol (such as Panadol, Calpol, or cold remedies). An overdose of paracetamol can cause irreversible, fatal liver failure.

Drowsiness Alert: The combination of doxylamine and codeine causes marked drowsiness and reduces coordination. Do not drive, operate machinery, or consume alcohol while taking this medication.

Contraindications: Vitapyn must not be given to children under 12 years of age. It is also contraindicated for individuals with severe respiratory depression (like severe asthma), head injuries, or severe liver impairment.
