Zinc sulphate tablets are widely used mineral supplements primarily prescribed to treat and prevent zinc deficiency, support immune function, and significantly reduce the duration and severity of acute diarrhoea in children.
Primary Medical Uses
-
Diarrhoea Management: Commonly given to children alongside Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) to accelerate gut recovery.
-
Immune & Tissue Support: Essential for cell growth, wound healing, protein synthesis, and immune defense.
-
Deficiency Correction: Reverses symptoms of low zinc, such as hair loss, skin lesions, and a loss of taste or smell.
Common Dosages
-
For Pediatric Diarrhoea:
-
Infants under 6 months: 10 mg daily for 10 to 14 days.
-
Children over 6 months: 20 mg daily for 10 to 14 days.
-
Adult Supplementation: Typically ranges from 45 mg to 50 mg of elemental zinc daily, though specific formulations vary (e.g., 200 mg zinc sulphate yields roughly 45 mg of elemental zinc).
Side Effects & Precautions
-
Stomach Distress: Can cause nausea, vomiting, heartburn, and abdominal cramps, especially if taken on an empty stomach.
-
Copper Deficiency: Prolonged high doses (above 40 mg of elemental zinc daily) can impair copper absorption, leading to anemia.
-
Drug Interactions: Zinc decreases the absorption of tetracycline or fluoroquinolone antibiotics, iron supplements, and penicillamine. Space these medications at least 2 hours apart.
